Transforming multi-purpose spaces in today’s homes often presents a unique challenge. While most people associate virtual staging with completely empty properties, many home sellers and their agents are now using this technology to enhance partially furnished rooms. Recently, I collaborated with a top Seattle realtor to transform a spacious laundry room into an inviting home gym through a blend of digital enhancement and existing elements.
The Evolution: From Basic Room to Home Gym
The starting point: A spacious room with washer/dryer units, a small TV on the floor, and a rowing machine. A blank canvas with potential!
Our first virtual staging attempt: We kept the rowing machine, added floating shelves, decorative elements, and a new area rug while digitally removing the floor TV.
Our second approach: Adjusting the TV content to show a person working out and refining the accessory placement.
The final result: A polished home gym featuring inspiring running imagery, coordinated exercise equipment, and thoughtful details that complement the existing rowing machine.
Working With What You Have: Blending Real and Virtual
What makes this project unique is how we integrated virtual staging with real elements already in the room. Looking at the “before” photo, you can see the room already had a rowing machine and a small TV on the floor. We kept the actual rowing machine as an anchor piece while digitally removing the TV to create a cleaner canvas.
This approach demonstrates one of virtual staging’s greatest strengths: the ability to work with what’s already there. Rather than starting from scratch, we enhanced the existing space, complementing the rowing machine with coordinating virtual elements that made the room feel cohesive and purposeful.
The journey from initial concept to final product involved three distinct versions, each improving on the last. We added rugs, exercise mats, fitness accessories, and even upgraded the media setup with a wall-mounted TV showing fitness content. Each iteration involved thoughtful feedback from the agent and careful adjustments to create a space that would help buyers envision their own workout routine in this versatile room.
Consistency Across Multiple Angles
One of the remarkable benefits of virtual staging is the ability to maintain consistency across different perspectives of the same space. When photographing a room from multiple angles, each view can be enhanced with the same virtual elements, creating a cohesive presentation that helps buyers fully visualize the potential of the space. Our laundry room project perfectly demonstrates this advantage. We captured the room from two different angles, maintaining the same design concept throughout while highlighting different features from each perspective.

This angle showcases how we enhanced the blank wall with coordinated blue artwork that complements the staging in the rest of the room.

By viewing the space from multiple angles, potential buyers can better understand how the room flows and functions. The consistent virtual staging across all images creates a complete picture that helps them envision themselves using this versatile space.
Beyond the Gym: Reimagining Multi-Purpose Spaces
While a home gym made perfect sense for this room (especially with the rowing machine already there), virtual staging offers endless possibilities for showcasing a space’s potential:
- Home Office/Study Area: Show buyers how they could create a productive workspace while incorporating any existing built-ins or architectural features.
- Arts & Crafts Studio: Transform the room into a creative sanctuary that works with the natural light or existing storage.
- Children’s Playroom: Help families envision a colorful, organized space that complements the room’s practical features.
